Brive is approximately 15 km (9 miles) from Turenne. Originally a Gallo-Roman town, Brive's city center contains many buildings of interest. The town's most important monument is St. Martin's Church. It was begun in 1180 and several times rebuilt. The surrounding streets still boast some fine old houses, often surmounted by turrets and sculpture. Brive has many antique stores and a variety of other shops. There are museums to enjoy as well on your day trip to Brive. Turenne itself has three excellent restaurants, and a bar. Nearby is the large super-market, Carrefour. Shopi is 10 minutes from Turenne and this small, excellent market is fully stocked with produce, canned goods, meats, bread, wine and other household supplies. Vineyards in Bergerac, Branceilles and Megenie produce good wine. Beer has been seriously produced in Limousin for more than one hundred years. Finally, sample the fine chocolates and violet mustard from Brive. |
