Ombre de la Tour is situated beneath the watchtower at the castle in Turenne, a picturesque medieval village in the heart of France. Turenne has been designated by the Association des Plus Beau Villages de France as One of the Most Beautiful Villages of France and is located in the magnificent Dordogne region.   The scenery is spectacular and there is much to do in the area.

Enjoy one of three romantic apartments in one Villa, each with its own private entrance surrounded by terraces, a roman pool and spectacular views of the Massif Central.   All apartments are furnished with linens, towels, cooking/dining utensils, microware, dishwasher, TV and a gas BBQ. A shared laundry is available.   The entire property can be rented as one unit for large groups offering privacy and spaciousness if desired.

Ombre de la Tour is a heartbeat away from prehistoric caves and incredible medieval villages like, Rocamador, Sarlat and Beaulieu sur Dordogne.   Cave paintings at Lascaux and Les Eyzies are evidence of life in prehistoric times.   Castles and chateaux from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries and Romanesque churches abound in the area. They represent the struggles of the 100 years war between France and England.   Others date from the Renaissance.

Turenne has been featured on the cover of the book Most Beautiful Villages of France by Dominique Reperant.

In Limoges, the porcelain manufacturers belong to the same families that have been producing Limoges for centuries and the contemporary designs are as stunning and as much in demand as their traditional ancestors.

Aubusson in the beautiful Creuse valley, has been famous as the weaving center for fine tapestries and carpets since the 15th century. You can visit the workshops and see a collection at the museum. The valley was a source of inspiration for many painters, including Claude Monet who worked at Fresselines where the River Creuse flows through wild gorges.

The National Stud farm and racecourse at Arnac-Pompadour can be visited. Here one can see the gardens of the chateau given as a gift by Louis XV to his mistress, Madame de Pompadour.

Climate

The area is spectacular in the spring and autumn with some rain, cooler mornings and evening but warm and sunny during the day. The summers are long to enjoy the activities, and the countryside dotted with lush grazing grounds, and colorful gardens. The days are very long and even in early June, darkness does not fall till after ten in the evening.

If you enjoy walking, water sports, horseback riding or cycling, this is an ideal location.   The spectacular beauty of the Dordogne River and six others provide opportunities for all water sports including canoeing, kayaking, swimming and fishing.   History comes alive on the back roads leading to medieval villages.   Bike riding on the picturesque roads with rolling hills and farms takes you close to the heart and soul of the region.   Picnic areas are accessible and "a jug of wine, a loaf of bread and thou" are all you need for a romantic day in the country.

This region is famous for its variety of foods, truffles, fois gras, apples, strawberries, walnuts and of course cheeses of every imaginable taste. You can find markets every day of the week in one village or another.   Brive market is reported to be one of the most exciting in France.   Meander the back roads and byways to discover the spectacular old world that still exists.
