Cuisine

The region is known for its excellent meat including lamb, hams, duck and goose from which pates and foie gras are made. A variety of fresh water fish add to the cuisine. Succulent cheeses, fresh bread and pastries make the region a gastronomical delight.

Chestnuts and mushrooms, or cepes, truffles, and morilles are gathered in the forests and are used in numerous dishes. The area around Turenne is noted for its walnuts. Chocolate covered nuts, walnut cake, and walnut bread are just a few delicacies for which the region is famous. The region is also known for its fruit, and blueberries, strawberries, gooseberries, raspberries and black currants that are used to make liqueurs, jams, tarts, and pastries.

Fresh fruit, produce, patés and cheeses are among the foods available at the weekly markets in Meyssac, Sarlat , or Brive, only a few minutes by car from Turenne.

Turenne has two excellent restaurants, a bar, plus a creperie. A small supperette has all the basics including wonderful breads, croissants and pastry . Nearby is the large super-market, Carrefour . Shopi is closer to Turenne and this small, excellent market is fully stocked with produce, canned goods, meats, bread, wine and other household supplies.

Vineyards in Begerac, Branceilles and Megenie produce good wine. Beer has been seriously produced in Limousin for more than one hundred years.

Finally, sample the fine chocolates and violet mustard from Brive.
